Ferry Law helps victims of abuse and neglect and particularly enjoys helping families whose child is abused or neglected in a community-based residential home. The business of caring for children and adults with profound forms of autism called aggression and self-injury behavior (SIB) is very demanding. The level of compassion and calm needed to take care of someone with SIB is extraordinary.
Unfortunately, the funding to pay people with the unique aptitude to properly do this job is elusive. Government funding to pay direct care workers fairly, for a job that may potentially include, being kicked, bitten, or have feces hurled at them, while simultaneously maintaining a calm composure, is severely lacking. If a greater portion of the American public was aware of the sheer scale of abuse and neglect that occurs in the Community Living arranged houses, we would rightfully start demanding more resources for direct care workers. Many of the homes that serve autistic members of our community are not for profit and are comprised of staff members who care deeply about, and have compassion for, autistic people. There are more kind and caring workers from the highest corporate office to the direct care workers than there are workers who are committing acts of abuse or neglect. None of these vulnerable people should experience abuse and the chief issue is that, many who tragically do, are nonverbal and cannot articulate what happened to them nor how they have been affected by it.
Ferry Law is here to help you navigate the anger and confusion after learning that your loved one was a victim of abuse or neglect. Our autistic community is growing, with as many as 1 out of 13 boys and 1 out of every 15 girls being born with some level of autism today.
The reasons for the exponential increase of autism in recent decades is currently the subject of extensive research and debate. Regardless of the reasons, be it environmental or otherwise, autistic children are angels that are here to teach us. They are often pure and innocent souls, offering us a different view into what the human experience can be like. The lessons, as I see it, are that we all have a deep calling to be authentic and pursue, unabashedly, our interests and dreams. We are no longer willing to play along with the phony stories propagated by people and institutions who do not know themselves and are solely interested in self-preservation.
Ferry Law has zealously advocated for vulnerable people and will bring change to the way we care for these communities who reside in the margins of society because, ultimately, they make our diverse society stronger and more beautiful. Please contact us to understand what we do and how we do it out of love and desire to make things better for all people dependent on kind, competent care givers.
